“The literature has linked the ongoing gap in Latino high school graduation rates because there is a lack of bilingual programs”

Many wonder why Latino kids drop out of school and are falling behind academically. This is because many public schools don’t offer ESL programs and/or have unequal educational opportunities. Public schools should be able to provide programs for students who want to learn and want to graduate. This argument is targeted to public schools, principles, ambassadors and the education system all across the nation. This meme can also be targeted to the students who are going through similar situations. I did a meme referencing a student with a cap and diploma slowly disappearing. Symbolizing their goal of graduating high school not exiting due to not having the opportunities given at their school because of their language barrier. I also included a fact stated by the Canadian Center of Science and Education “National high school dropout rates have indicated that Latinos have a 300% higher chance of dropping out than their Caucasian counterparts at 4%….. because there is a lack of bilingual programs“ I used two rhetorical strategies pathos and logos to convey this message. I specifically used pathos to persuade this argument because it lets the targeted audience get a hint of an emotional rollercoaster. From reading the meme and finding it funny to realizing it’s a serious issue that needs to be shown and be spread. The Latin community can feel the anger and sadness throughout this meme and even post it to let others feel sympathy and share it too. During today’s modern day, users’ posts grab attention from others in a way to get likes or repost the same content as them. Memes are one of the many best ways to spread the word out there. Students that go through a similar occurrence will be able to post it on social media and even websites such as Buzzfeed, Huffington Post etc. can use this meme to portray that. I also used the rhetorical strategy logos in my meme by adding a credible source which states how high the percentage of students dropout is because of the fear of not understanding the language. Giving the audience a fact by a trusted source, lets them believe the issue is being heard and important to dig deeper. Using both these strategies combined, the audience would want to learn more about this argument and help by expanding their knowledge on this issue.
