Self-Assessment

During this class, I already had a sense of what we were going to learn about and the skills needed for it. Yet,  I still learned so many skills and improved them throughout this course. Sitting in this class and listening to my other peers work, it made me expand my writing and thoughts into a bigger perspective. I didn’t think as deeply as I thought I did and realized I have to ask myself more questions in order to achieve my goal for this writing. I really enjoyed this class and getting to read other amazing classmates’ work. Not only that, but I also appreciated the feedback given from the professor and my classmates, given  that it was read from another perspective,  in order to improve my work.

During phase 1, when I wrote my Literacy Narrative titled Daddy’s Little Girl I definitely used “Develop strategies for reading, drafting, collaborating, revising, and editing”. I say I used this course learning outcome because in order to write my Literacy Narrative, I read articles from other authors to explore my ideas. For example Amy Tan, Sawfat Saleem and other amazing authors. I also used my own personal life and wrote about how I came about writing, speaking and how it grew me as a person. With all these thoughts, I had to analyze my ideas so it would be smoother and readable. Therefore, I had used the help from other examples and created my first draft. I collaborated with my classmates and they helped me revise my work. My peers went over my essay and pointed out some run ons and missing punctuation I had to fix. After that, I went over my work and corrected it. With the help and advice they gave me, I used that to go over my work and fix any mistakes in order to make my essay more exciting and understandable. I am satisfied with using that Course Learning Outcome because using all these strategies helped me write my Literacy Narrative and build my essay to a stronger version.

Although Phase 2 was shorter than Phase 1. I did enjoy looking at different clips in class and how we can use the connections we made and input them into our own Rhetorical text. I created my own rhetorical text by putting together a meme showing a cap and diploma disappearing. This is about Latino students dropping out of school due to their language barrier and not being given the education needed to succeed. For this phase, I say I use the Course Learning Outcome,“Explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations.” because I used some rhetorical strategies in order to engage with my targeted audience. For example, I used pathos and logos for my rhetorical text. I used pathos to get an emotional response out of this meme and get the attention of a younger audience and logos to provide background information as to why the diploma and cap are disappearing. I also used “Recognize and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies when engaged in writing situations.” because I was practicing how to properly use rhetorical terms while informing the audience about the unfair system to Latino students.

Phase 3 was yet the hardest but the phase where I learned a couple of new things. My paper was about the unfair education system with immigrant students such as Latinos and African Americans and why many of them fail to graduate and drop out. I also explained how this impacted their lives in negative ways and the impacts dealing with the issues it came with being an immigrant. While writing my essay I used one of the course learning outcomes, “Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) in the library’s databases or archives and on the Internet and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias.”  In my research essay, I located trustworthy resources using scholar google and input them into my essay.. I mentioned the author’s name and the articles where I got my information from and made sure to cite the article and give credibility to the author. I located newspaper articles and journals as I researched for my evidence and I used information that was closest to today’s modern day so it can be the most accurate to my research paper. I also used the course learning outcome,“Compose texts that integrate a stance with appropriate sources, using strategies such as summary, analysis, synthesis, and argumentation.” because I learned how to synthesize all of my information and put them together in one piece. I learned how to make my essay flow in a way that won’t confuse my reader by adding transition words and also analyzed the quotes I chose from the article. I added a brief explanation on why I chose that quote which ended off my paragraph. I enjoyed using that course outcome because I synthesized my work and using the example given in class, it made it easier for me to include what information I had towards my claim. Phase 3 helped me learn how to transition my paragraphs into one essay, learn how to synthesize properly and how to properly cite trustworthy articles.

Overall this course, I used many of the course learning outcomes to achieve my goal in every piece of writing. I learned how to properly find resources using Scholar google and being able to synthesize my work together. I’m also a visual learner and in this class many examples were given which I used to help me create my writing. Also clips of Ted Talks, poetry etc were shown to the class which expanded my thoughts. Those tools helped me get passed this semester. I learned so much during this course that will stick with me for the future.
